Raised Bed Soil Calculator
Calculate how much soil you need for a raised garden bed, including cubic feet, cubic yards, liters, bag count, fill mix, and estimated cost.
Subtract a bottom filler layer such as branches, cardboard, dry leaves, or gravel from the soil depth.
Enter any ratio, such as 60 / 30 / 10. The calculator normalizes the ratio and shows how much of each material to buy.

Plan Soil Before You Buy
Use this raised bed soil calculator for common garden planning questions before heading to the store or ordering bulk soil.
How to calculate raised bed soil
The basic raised bed soil formula is rectangular volume: length x width x soil depth. Convert everything to the same unit before multiplying.
This garden soil calculator converts feet, inches, meters, centimeters, cubic yards, cubic feet, and liters. If you use bottom filler, the calculator subtracts filler height first, then multiplies the remaining soil depth by the bed area and number of beds.
Common raised bed soil amounts
These examples use 12 inches of soil depth and 1.5 cu ft bags, which makes them useful for quick raised bed soil planning.
Raised bed soil depth guide
Soil depth depends on what you grow and how the bed is built. These are planning ranges, not guarantees.
Shallow herbs and quick greens
Can work for some shallow-rooted plants, especially with careful watering.
Common vegetable planning depth
A common target for many raised vegetable beds when you want more root space.
Deeper-rooted crops and dry climates
Adds moisture buffer and more room for larger root systems.
Tall beds, deep containers, or accessibility beds
Consider using a false bottom or filler if the full depth does not need to be soil.
Bag size conversion tips
Bag labels vary by store and country. Convert the label volume before dividing your total soil need by bag size.
