How to calculate raised bed soil

The basic raised bed soil formula is rectangular volume: length x width x soil depth. Convert everything to the same unit before multiplying.

Volume = length x width x soil depth
1 cu yd = 27 cu ft
1 cu ft = 28.3168 L

This garden soil calculator converts feet, inches, meters, centimeters, cubic yards, cubic feet, and liters. If you use bottom filler, the calculator subtracts filler height first, then multiplies the remaining soil depth by the bed area and number of beds.

Common raised bed soil amounts

These examples use 12 inches of soil depth and 1.5 cu ft bags, which makes them useful for quick raised bed soil planning.

Raised bed soil depth guide

Soil depth depends on what you grow and how the bed is built. These are planning ranges, not guarantees.

6 inches

Shallow herbs and quick greens

Can work for some shallow-rooted plants, especially with careful watering.

10-12 inches

Common vegetable planning depth

A common target for many raised vegetable beds when you want more root space.

18 inches

Deeper-rooted crops and dry climates

Adds moisture buffer and more room for larger root systems.

24 inches or more

Tall beds, deep containers, or accessibility beds

Consider using a false bottom or filler if the full depth does not need to be soil.

Bag size conversion tips

Bag labels vary by store and country. Convert the label volume before dividing your total soil need by bag size.

Cubic feet bags
Most US garden soil bags list volume in cubic feet. Divide total cubic feet by bag cubic feet, then round up.
Liter bags
A 40 L bag is about 1.41 cu ft. This calculator converts liters to cubic feet automatically.
Bulk cubic yards
Bulk soil is often sold by cubic yard. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
